National Adopt A Senior Pet Month

Do you have the special qualities it takes to adopt a senior pet?

Mama Nutmeg

Millions of animals enter shelters every year, and many of those animals are seniors. It’s very common for senior pets to not be adopted, because people are afraid to take on the responsibility. Little do people know that senior pets make amazing companions, and could actually be a better fit than a younger animal.

What are the benefits of adopting a senior pet?

To begin with, when you adopt a senior pet you pretty much know what to expect from them. They’ve reached their full size, and they have their adult coat color. You can go in looking for a small dog, and come out with a small dog that you know for sure is going to stay small. Older pets are also the perfect Netflix buddies, because they have a lot less energy than younger animals. Senior pets in general require less energy than a puppy or kitten might need, and could be the perfect fit for someone who wants an animal that is more calm, cool, and collected.

Where do I find a senior pet to adopt?

More likely than not, you can find senior pets to adopt at any shelter near where you live. With that being said, you may want to do research on what kind of shelter it is, and make sure you agree with their principles. Are they no-kill? Are they non-profit? It’s important to do your research. If you’re wondering where to start you search, check out Long Way Home Adoptables. Long Way Home is a Texas based rescue, and has many senior (and non-senior) pets available for adoption. You may have heard about them because of their beautiful mascot, Mama Nutmeg, a senior chi, who was rescued and then turned into a foster fail. Long Way Home is a non-profit, and runs completely off of public donations. It’s a great place to start your search for a senior pet!
